Meet SPOT Pet Insurance

One of the newer members of the pack, SPOT Pet Insurance is also one of the fastest growing pet health insurance providers in the marketplace. Together with renowned canine trainer and animal behaviorist Cesar Millan, they are bringing SPOT Pet Insurance to the masses and educating pet parents about the role insurance can play in improving their pets’ lives.

SPOT Company Overview

SPOT Pet Insurance is headquartered in West Palm Beach, Florida. The company launched in late 2019, partnering with Cesar Millan who joined as Chairman. Cesar gained global recognition through his TV show “The Dog Whisperer,” inspiring millions of dog owners and making him a fitting spokesperson as the face of SPOT.

SPOT is committed to helping pet owners become better informed pet parents, which they believe leads to happier, healthier pets. That commitment is demonstrated through their approach to insurance, education and customer service. Their customizable insurance policies can help alleviate the emotional and financial worry pet parents face when an injury or illness arises, supporting them in getting the care their pet needs. Plus, they provide interactive access to a wealth of pet health information and a friendly, human connection from a knowledgeable customer support team.

As pet parents themselves, the SPOT team knows your faithful companions are part of your family. That’s why they created insurance plans that make better health and well-being possible for their pets and yours.

SPOT Plans and Coverage

SPOT plans offer pet-centric coverage for accidents and illnesses, plus an optional add-on benefit for routine and preventive care. SPOT On Coverage (as they’ve dubbed their plans) provides protection in the event of many health-related concerns and conditions. They are loaded with benefits that come standard and allow pet parents to customize the specific plan variables. See SPOT Plan Customization section below.

There’s a long list of coverage under their Accident and Illness Plans, which includes diagnostic exams and treatments for when your pet is ill or injured, treatment for hereditary conditions and chronic issues, plus alternative therapies and behavioral training for covered conditions. These are things that may cost more as an add-on, or are not covered, by some other pet insurance providers. See SPOT Coverage Details section below.

An Accident-Only Plan is also available that covers only injuries.

SPOT plans are available for dogs and cats of all breeds and ages. Use any licensed veterinarian in the U.S. or Canada, including vet specialists and emergency centers. Visit the vet of your choice, pay the bill, then submit a claim for reimbursement for covered treatments or services.

SPOT Plan Customization Options

For flexibility in building a plan that meets the anticipated medical needs of your pet at a price you can afford, SPOT plans can be customized in three areas—annual limit, deductible and reimbursement level.

The annual limit is the total amount you can be reimbursed toward covered expenses during a 12-month policy year. Unlike other pet insurance providers that may offer only a few choices, SPOT currently offers six options for the annual limit ranging from $2,500 on the low end to unlimited.

The deductible is the amount you pay in vet expenses per year before you start receiving reimbursements. Again, SPOT offers more choices than many other providers, giving you five deductible options ranging from $100 to $1,000.

The reimbursement level is the percentage of covered expenses you will be reimbursed after satisfying your deductible. SPOT offers three reimbursement percentage options, which is the norm for many pet insurance providers. Choose from 70%, 80% or 90%.

There are no per-incident deductibles or lifetime maximums on benefits. The options you choose for annual limit, deductible and reimbursement level impact your monthly premium, which you will see as you build your plan using their online quoting tool.

$10,000, Unlimited

SPOT Coverage Details

Like medical care in the human world, the cost of veterinary care continues to rise. To help manage those expenses, pet insurance provides a financial safety net for pet parents. It covers injuries and accidents like bite wounds or lodged foreign objects, and illnesses like respiratory infections or cancer. It also covers chronic issues such as arthritis or diabetes, and hereditary conditions like heart disease or eye disorders. SPOT goes even further by including coverage for alternative therapies like chiropractic and homeopathic care, plus coverage for treatment of behavioral problems like anxiety, excessive licking and even litter box issues. Coverage excludes pre-existing conditions. See SPOT Coverage Exclusions for more info on pre-existing conditions.

Not all pet insurance providers cover the exact same things, in the exact same way. Regardless of which provider you choose for pet insurance, take the time to learn about what’s covered before you buy.

SPOT Sample Pricing

Like other pet insurance providers, SPOT premiums are based on the age and breed of your pet, where you live (zip code), and how you customize your plan’s annual limit, deductible and reimbursement level. When you run a quote online, SPOT will show you their most affordable plan, their most popular plan, and their plan that offers the most reimbursement. Choose one of those options, or modify the variables to customize your own plan and price.

To give you an idea of how modifying the variables can affect your monthly premium, here are sample SPOT plan prices using the lowest and highest options for a mixed breed dog or cat in an average metropolitan area.2

From kittens to puppies to seniors, SPOT plans are available to all breeds of dogs and cats ages eight weeks and older, with no maximum enrollment age. There is a 14-day waiting period from the effective date of your policy before eligible treatments and services are covered. While SPOT doesn’t place an upper limit on enrollment age, they advise pet parents to insure their pet at a younger age, if possible, before their pet develops a pre-existing condition. SPOT Coverage Exclusions

Like all pet insurance providers, there are some things that are not covered in your SPOT plan. Examples include breeding, cosmetic or elective procedures, day care/boarding, and conditions that are pre-existing and/or occur before or during the waiting period.

SPOT addresses pre-existing conditions differently than many other pet insurance providers by providing an option for coverage under certain circumstances. An injury or illness that is cured and free of treatment and symptoms for 180 days will no longer be regarded as pre-existing by SPOT, with the exception of knee and ligament conditions.
